Is it just me or has interests in the 80's style tacky, sweet,risky... fun cocktails sparked up among clientelle these days?
Before you stone me or start whipping out the blue cuacao, Hear me out.
My team of well trained, admittedly snobby young bartenders have been coming up to me more often the past two months. "whats an allabama slammer, freddy fudpucker... long beach iced tea or a colorado bulldog (even a blue lagoon last week). I noted two things.
1)As opposed to me when I started, my boys/girl can make any manhattan/sazerac/white lady/blood and sand to perfection, but ask them for a sex on the beach and a blue kamakaze, they get jittery.
2)I dont know if it is the summer or the economical changes , but are these drinks back? I have been making a fair amount of them these days. (It makes me feel old)
Have any other people in the industry noted the same thing, or is it just me?
I do not completely approve of this BUT we may have been taking ourselves a bit too seriously the past few years...and I kind of enjoyed it a little.
Why the long face?
Hi David.
Its not just you!
The last months I have seen bartenders secretly making tiki drinks.
The drinks are strong rum based drinks and ofcourse a direct recipe or a twist on from Intoxica, to still be able to say,..listen this is a classic!
But when the bartender is making the drink you see a smile on there face..
I agree with you that most bartenders have work really hard to create a proper carreer in the industry and maybe became a bit to serious. Then its great fun if you rediscover those 'tacky' drinks.
As for our guests,. I dont think they really ever wanted (or did) to stop asking for one of those nice looking drinks....
Cheers!
